STEERING SQUEAKS

NOISY STEERING COLUMN WHILE TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT

To fix it, you have to take apart a lot of things, starting with the airbag. After you fix it, the replacement parts might well develop the same problem if the assembly process is not done right.

You have to be proper professional to deal with such cases.

It can be problem of clock spring or the issue is not with clock spring but with the steering column itself.

These has to be inspected.

The Details below explains the procedure:----

The clockspring's function is to provide power to controls horn and AIRBAG in the hub of the steering wheel, the clockspring is not a "cable that wraps around the steering column".

The clockspring is a small circular part with electrical connectors, and these connectors hook up with the cable that runs next to (not wrapped around) the steering column. The circular design of the clockspring allows for constant electrical contact in a situation where a normal wire-type connection would not be possible, given the constant movement of the steering wheel.

Please Note: The clockspring's connections and proximity to the driver's side airbag.A mistake made in this area can result in a sudden "explosive" surprise in your face with a blast.

Its not a DIY job.

But if its not related to clockspring then problem can be with steering itself.

If the vehicle does not use any hydraulic fluid to run the power steering. Then as per most of all vehicles on the road nowadays use electric drive motors to turn the power steering assist system.
This being said the most common issue with intermittent squeaking noises
On some cases it is the rubber boot that is in the firewall where the steering shaft goes through.
This rubber boot has a tendency to make squeaking noise against the steering shaft once the lubricant in their gets dry. If the boot is felt hard that you can use silicone paste to lubricate this.
Most auto garage mechanics use this paste to lubricate rubber materials.

A minor steering squeaks should not cause any damage if the squeak is in fact coming from the steel shaft where it goes through this rubber boot and the firewall.

These issues can be easily solved by non-technicians ,just lubricate this yourself with a small brush.

Please Note:--- Do not use any petroleum based lubricants only use silicone paste. Just push the paste down between shaft and the rubber boot with the help of brush as you turn the steering wheel back and forth. This should take care the noise if that is where it is coming from.

ONE OF MY CUSTOMER HAD SAME STEERING SQUEAK ISSUE ON HIS ROVER CITY VEHICLE......

The most common faults on these models are the steering wheel  rubbing on the plastic cowling, or it could be the rotary coupler behind the steering wheel getting worn out.
This unit is very delicate and is connected to your airbag and horn circuit.
In case of steering wheel rubbing with plastic cowling, bit of wd-40 spray can help and do wonders to to at-least lower the squeak noise.

FOR SQUEAK STEERING TOYOTA VEHICLES

On these vehicles like other vehicles there is a rubber boot at the bottom of the steering column where the shaft from the column goes through that makes squeaking noise when the boot contacts the steering shaft while turning the steering wheel on your model..
If these boot gets hard the noise comes out while turning steering column
You can use Seal–Tite Dielectric grease (or Equivalent) Kent 57876 is the part number..
and apply this grease in between the steering shaft and the boot .These grease will lubricate the rubber boot and noise will go away.

OTHER THEN THESE RUBBER BOOTS.THERE ARE MANY OTHER COMPONENTS THAT CAN MAKE THE SQUEAK NOISE FROM STEERING COLUMN

The garage repair experiences shared from 1997 Ford F150 steering makes squeaking noise

There are several components in the front end will cause the squeak.
Ask someone to urn the steering wheel left and right while you are under the truck in front.
Inspect  each part one at a time and exactly confirm from which part the noise is coming.

The possible squeak the noise can occur from are the outer tie rods, the idler arm on the right front frame rail, the pitman arm on the steering box, and both lower ball joints. I have replaced each one of them for the squeak. So anything can be possible. Your inspection should be right.

These details will help.
Thanks.
